Marche Italy

Marche is a region in central Italy, bordered by Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the west, Umbria to the southwest, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Apart from river valleys and the often very narrow coastal strip, the landscape is predominantly hilly. A railway line from Bologna to Brindisi, built in the 19th century, runs along the coast for the entire length of the region. Inland, the mountainous terrain still makes north–south travel relatively limited, except via winding roads that cross the passes. The Umbrian enclave of Monte Ruperto (a subdivision of the comune of Città di Castello) is entirely surrounded by the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, which forms the northern part of Marche. Urbino, one of the region’s main cities, was the birthplace of Raphael and an important center of Renaissance history.
