Marche Italy

This central Italian region is bordered by Emilia-Romagna and the Republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the west, Umbria to the south-west, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Apart from its river valleys and an often very narrow coastal strip, the landscape is mainly hilly. A railway line from Bologna to Brindisi, built in the 19th century, runs along the coast through the entire region. Inland, the mountainous terrain still makes north–south travel relatively limited, apart from winding roads that cross the mountain passes. The Umbrian enclave of Monte Ruperto (part of the Comune of Città di Castello) is entirely surrounded by the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, which forms the northern part of Marche. Urbino, one of the region’s main cities, was the birthplace of Raphael and an important centre of the Renaissance.
