Hawaii Island, often called the Big Island, is the largest and geologically youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, with striking contrasts in landscape and weather. In a single day you can walk over hardened lava in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, wander through lush rainforests, and unwind on white-, black-, and even green-sand beaches. Hilo, on the other hand, has impressive waterfalls such as ʻAkaka Falls, botanical gardens, and easy access to the island’s volcanic scenery. If you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll be spoiled for choice. You can hike across the Kīlauea Iki crater, walk through lava tubes, or go stargazing near the summit of Maunakea, one of the world’s top spots for astronomy (it’s best to go on a guided tour and to be mindful of cultural sensitivities). Along the Kohala Coast you’ll find luxury resorts beside excellent snorkelling sites and calm beaches, while the back roads of North Kohala lead to lush valleys like Pololū, where a short hike brings you to sweeping coastal views. To get more out of your visit, take time to learn about Native Hawaiian culture and history, which are very much alive on Hawaii Island. Call into cultural centres and heiau (temples), go to a local hula or music event, and try island dishes—from poke and fresh ahi to loco moco and shave ice. You’ll need a car to really see the Big Island, so keep your plans flexible and allow extra time for scenic stops; the drives between places can be just as memorable as the sights themselves.
