Martina Franca, Italy

Martina Franca Italy

In 1495, about one third of Martina Franca’s population consisted of practicing Jews or Jews who had converted to Christianity. The ensuing flight involved that same proportion of the inhabitants: 150 to 200 families, or at least one thousand people. Among the privileges granted to the city council of Martina Franca in 1495, King Frederick of Aragon forbade Jews, Crypto-Jews, and Neophytes from bringing charges against those who had robbed them—likely during the riots of 1494–1495 that accompanied the French invasion of the Kingdom of Naples—and prohibited them from settling in the city. Also in 1495, the Jews of Martina Franca were massacred.
