Volterra, Italy

Volterra Italy

Volterra is a town in the province of Pisa, in the region of Tuscany, Italy. Archaeological findings show that in the Neolithic period Volterra was already inhabited. The town witnessed the birth of the Etruscan civilisation and became one of the main cities of the Etruscan League, which is why it was surrounded by 7 km of solid walls. In 283 BC the Romans defeated the Etruscans at the Battle of Lake Vadimone and, a few years later, Volterra became part of the Italian Confederation, changing its name to Volaterrae. Today the town offers many interesting sights, such as the ruins of Velathri, the famous Porta all’Arco within its walled enclosure, the Etruscan necropolis, and the Cathedral dating from the 12th–14th centuries.
