Gubbio Italy

Gubbio is a town and comune in the far north‑eastern part of the Italian province of Perugia (Umbria). It sits on the lowest slopes of Mt Ingino, a small mountain in the Apennines. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Palazzo dei Consoli – built between 1332 and 1337, this is an impressive public building dominating the town skyline. • Festa dei Ceri – held every year on 15 May, this is a spectacular festival featuring a madcap race through the narrow streets, where teams carry three huge wooden “candles”, each weighing about 300 kg. • Basilica of St Ubaldo – a sanctuary on Mt Ingino that houses the remains of Gubbio’s patron saint and offers wide views over the area. • Palazzo Ducale – an ancient palace rebuilt in the 15th century in Renaissance style, with an elegant courtyard and fine architectural details. • The Cathedral – a 14th‑century Gothic church with a 16th‑century façade, a beautiful Gothic portal and rich decoration. Inside, ten arches support the roof and there are several noteworthy paintings. • Piazza 40 Martiri – this square commemorates 40 citizens of Gubbio who were shot by German forces in June 1944. Here you’ll find the Church of St Francis (San Francesco), linked to St Francis of Assisi, and the so‑called “Fountain of the Mad”. • Roman Theatre – the remains of an ancient Roman theatre, especially atmospheric at sunset and sometimes used for events. • Museo Civico (in Palazzo dei Consoli) – the civic museum and art gallery, best known for the Iguvine Tablets, seven bronze tablets discovered in Gubbio in 1444, which are among the most important inscriptions in the ancient Umbrian language.
