Martina Franca, Italy

Martina Franca Italy

In 1495, one third of the population of Martina Franca was made up of practising Jews or Jews who had converted to Christianity. Around a third of the population fled the town: between 150 and 200 families, amounting to at least one thousand people. Among the privileges granted to the city council of Martina Franca in 1495, King Frederick of Aragon forbade Jews, Crypto‑Jews and Neofiti from bringing charges against those who had robbed them (most likely during the riots of 1494–1495, which took place during the French invasion of the Kingdom of Naples) and banned them from settling in the town. Also in 1495, the Jews of Martina Franca were massacred.
