Madesimo Italy

This Alpine resort shares its setting with the ski areas of Motta and Valle di Lei. The ski area reaches a maximum height of 3,000 metres, making it one of the highest in the Italian Alps. The mid-station sits at 2,150 metres, while the base area is at 1,550 metres. This gives Madesimo a vertical drop of around 1,500 metres, placing it among the top ten Italian resorts. On the mountain, there are 61 kilometres of pistes spread across 33 marked runs. These include one beginner green run, 15 blue runs, 13 red runs for advanced skiers, and five black runs for experts. To access the ski area, Madesimo offers 12 lifts in total. Access to the ski resort is via the village of Madesimo in the province of Sondrio. The resort forms part of the Valchiavenna ski area, one of the most popular among British skiers. This Alpine area includes the villages of Madesimo, Campodolcino, Motta and the Valle di Lei. Madesimo is also well known for its off-piste skiing, thanks to reliable snowfall and extensive woodland and mountain trails. One of the most popular itineraries starts from Pizzo Groppera and finishes at Pian dei Larici. The route is about 3 kilometres long, beginning at almost 3,000 metres and dropping by nearly 1,000 metres. In the Valle di Lei, a highlight is the descent via the Angeloga Pass down to the village of Fraciscio. Every Saturday night the resort opens a selection of pistes for night skiing, notably the ‘Pianello’ and ‘Montalto’ runs. Lift passes for night skiing usually cost under €10, and the access gondola runs until 22:30.
