Oranjestad Aruba

Oranjestad is the capital and largest city of Aruba, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It’s situated on the southern coast near the western end of the island. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often called “Playa”. The city features some Dutch Colonial architecture. With growing government interest in protecting the island’s cultural heritage, a number of old buildings and houses in the town centre have been turned into colourfully restored landmarks, such as the lime-coloured Civil Registry on Wilhelminastraat. Several modern developments have appeared, including the open-air shopping centre at Royal Plaza and a few scattered buildings along Main Street and on the Main Square. Fort Zoutman is one of the town’s main attractions. Others include the tax-free harbour and the Willem III Tower, located near the fort. There are roughly eight museums on the island.
