Civitella Paganico Italy

Civitella Paganico is a municipality in the Province of Grosseto in the Italian region of Tuscany. The landscape is mainly agricultural – the backbone of the local economy – interspersed with dense forest and home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. One of its main attractions is the Petriolo hot springs, enjoyed by travellers for thousands of years. Human presence in the Civitella Paganico area likely dates back to the Palaeolithic period. The territory preserves Etruscan and Roman remains. During the Middle Ages, it was ruled in turn by the Ardengheschi family, the Republic of Siena and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. As of 2013, the municipality had 3,291 inhabitants, around 15% of whom were foreign nationals. Civitella Paganico includes several small villages, the largest being Paganico, while the municipal seat is in Civitella Marittima. The area is also known for an Etruscan tomb discovered intact in 2007, where the remains of 30 individuals were found within a small chamber.
