Tucked away in the heart of the Dolomites, Lake Braies (Lago di Braies) is one of Italy’s most iconic alpine lakes, famous for its emerald-green water and dramatic mountain backdrop. It’s in South Tyrol, close to the Austrian border, and while it’s easy enough to reach from towns like Dobbiaco and Brunico, it still feels wonderfully remote and peaceful, especially early in the morning or outside the peak summer season. Most people begin with the classic lakeside walk, a well-marked loop that takes about 1 to 1½ hours at an easy pace. The path is generally straightforward, with a few short, steeper sections and some wooden steps along the far side of the lake. You’ll pass a number of great viewpoints for photos, a small chapel on the northern shore, and plenty of quiet spots where you can sit and enjoy the mountains mirrored in the water. In summer, you can hire one of the traditional wooden rowing boats for a gentle spin on the lake, or use Braies as a starting point for longer hikes into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. In winter, the whole area turns into a snowy wonderland: the lake usually freezes over, the surrounding forests are blanketed in snow, and nearby ski resorts and cross-country tracks draw in winter sports fans. A few practical tips: arrive early in high season to dodge the crowds and make sure you get parking, as vehicle access can be limited at busy times. Wear solid footwear, as paths can be uneven or muddy, and bring a few layers—mountain weather can change quickly, even when it starts out sunny. You’ll find everything from lakeside hotels to guesthouses in nearby villages, so it’s easy to slot Braies into a longer trip around the Dolomites.
