Altomonte Italy

The name says it all: Altomonte, this small Calabrian town is so magical it’s earned the nickname “the Wedding City”. It’s in the province of Cosenza and offers picture‑perfect corners everywhere you turn. Medieval buildings and historic churches seem to rise straight out of the hillsides, and its winding cobbled lanes are ideal for getting lost and wandering without any particular plan. As you stroll along, losing all sense of time, you’ll come across galleries showcasing sacred art, imposing towers and beautifully preserved facades. Among the highlights is the Church of Santa Maria del Consiglio, a majestic 14th‑century Gothic church that houses an impressive collection of art you really shouldn’t miss. While you’re there, it’s well worth visiting the Museum of Santa Maria del Consiglio too. Another highly recommended stop is the Franco Azzinari Museum, near the Palotta Tower. Once a defensive tower in nomadic times, it now holds a wide collection of works by regional artists. On the outskirts of Altomonte you’ll keep discovering real architectural landmarks, such as Altomonte Castle, the Dominican Monastery, the Civic Museum and the Church of San Francesco di Paola. Don’t miss the views over landscapes dotted with vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards, and be sure to sample the fresh local produce, including the area’s wines.
